Checkered shadow

This is the same physics behind a much more famous phenomenon: during a partial solar eclipse, gaps between tree leaves project hundreds of tiny crescent-moon shapes onto the ground instead of normal dappled light circles. The shape and pattern of the leaves or the type of light can cause the checkered shadow pattern.
