Why modern cameras still capture “ghosts”

With billions of smartphones and high-resolution cameras in use today, you might expect clear photographs of ghosts to be everywhere if they were real. Instead, the same visual effects continue to appear. Motion blur, reflections in glass, lens flare, fog, dust close to the lens, insects illuminated by a camera flash, and automatic image processing can all produce strange figures or glowing shapes that look mysterious at first glance.

Before you call the ghost hunters…

Most ghost photographs become much less mysterious once the full scene is revealed. A reflection in a window, a person walking through a long exposure, or an object just outside the frame often explains what initially appeared impossible. That’s why we encourage you to examine each image carefully before reading the explanation. You may solve the mystery yourself.
