Perspective Changes Everything
Many chair illusions rely on perspective. From one viewpoint, a chair may look perfectly ordinary. Move a few steps to the side, however, and the illusion disappears. Designers and artists often take advantage of this by creating anamorphic furniture or sculptures that only make sense from a single angle. Other illusions happen purely by accident, when objects behind the chair line up perfectly and trick the brain into seeing something completely different.

The Impossible Chair
Furniture designers have long enjoyed challenging our expectations.
Some chairs appear to balance on a single leg. Others seem to float above the ground or twist into impossible shapes that couldn’t exist in reality. Although many of these designs use hidden supports or clever engineering, they exploit the same visual shortcuts that make optical illusions so effective: our brains expect gravity, balance, and structure to behave in predictable ways.
