Why we jump to extraordinary explanations

When we encounter something unfamiliar, our brains naturally search for an explanation. A distant balloon, an unusual cloud, or a rare atmospheric effect may not immediately fit our expectations, making more dramatic interpretations seem tempting. This isn’t a flaw in human thinking. It’s simply how our brains deal with incomplete information. Optical illusions remind us that appearances can be remarkably deceptive.
