The man on the left is not standing in the water next to the boat. He is sitting with his friends in the boat. But the optical illusion even holds up when you zoom in.
The hand lines up perfectly with the side of the boat, hiding how far out the gunwale bows outward. Combined with the shadow of the arm, the breasthook gets mistaken for the gunwale.
